Is your Organisation chart, quietly breaking your Business?
Hereโs something Iโve learned over the years working with business owners and leadership teams:
Your organisation chart is probably two years out of date.
Most businesses grow fast but organsation charts, donโt.
That might not seem like a big deal, until you realise how much time, energy and profit, itโs actually costing you.
The Real Problem Behind the Scenes
I see this all the time:
- Youโve got directors acting like managers (doing task work rather that strategic work).
- Managers acting like task-doers (instead of driving results).
- And team members sitting in seats that no longer match the level, the business is operating at.
Itโs not because anyoneโs doing a bad job. Itโs just that the structure hasnโt kept up. When structure doesnโt evolve, the business slows down, even if itโs trying to grow.
A Simple Leadership Test
Hereโs something your can do today.
Grab your organisation chart, whatever version youโve got. Next to each name, write down the job that person should be doing at this stage of the business. Not what they are doing right now, but what they should be doing.
Then compare the two.
See the gap between what theyโre doing and what they should be doing? Thatโs where profit leaks, where speed dies and where burnout begins for you, for them, and for the whole business.
Why This Happens to So Many Good Businesses
It’s because youโre busy. Youโre scaling. Youโre firefighting.
In addition, it’s because no one really reminds you to keep your structure evolving as fast as your revenue is. Itโs a low priority item, one that usually comes with a “it’s not really that important” and โweโll re-do it that later.โ
However, ‘later’ becomes next year. ‘Next year’, becomes a business thatโs constantly dragging itself forward instead of flowing with momentum.
What To Do Now
If this is true for you, hereโs what Iโd suggest:
- Be honest about what roles you need today, not whatโs been inherited.
- Donโt be afraid to reshuffle. If someoneโs outgrown their seat or the seatโs outgrown them, make the change.
- Use your structure to drive clarity. Everyone should know what they own and what theyโre trusted to lead.
- Make this a regular habit. Your business is growingโyour org chart should grow with it.
