Is your Organisation chart, quietly breaking your Business?

Hereโ€™s something Iโ€™ve learned over the years working with business owners and leadership teams:

Your organisation chart is probably two years out of date.

Most businesses grow fast but organsation charts, donโ€™t.

That might not seem like a big deal, until you realise how much time, energy and profit, itโ€™s actually costing you.

The Real Problem Behind the Scenes

I see this all the time:

  • Youโ€™ve got directors acting like managers (doing task work rather that strategic work).
  • Managers acting like task-doers (instead of driving results).
  • And team members sitting in seats that no longer match the level, the business is operating at.

Itโ€™s not because anyoneโ€™s doing a bad job. Itโ€™s just that the structure hasnโ€™t kept up. When structure doesnโ€™t evolve, the business slows down, even if itโ€™s trying to grow.

A Simple Leadership Test

Hereโ€™s something your can do today.

Grab your organisation chart, whatever version youโ€™ve got. Next to each name, write down the job that person should be doing at this stage of the business. Not what they are doing right now, but what they should be doing.

Then compare the two.

See the gap between what theyโ€™re doing and what they should be doing? Thatโ€™s where profit leaks, where speed dies and where burnout begins for you, for them, and for the whole business.

Why This Happens to So Many Good Businesses

It’s because youโ€™re busy. Youโ€™re scaling. Youโ€™re firefighting.

In addition, it’s because no one really reminds you to keep your structure evolving as fast as your revenue is. Itโ€™s a low priority item, one that usually comes with a “it’s not really that important” and โ€œweโ€™ll re-do it that later.โ€

However, ‘later’ becomes next year. ‘Next year’, becomes a business thatโ€™s constantly dragging itself forward instead of flowing with momentum.

What To Do Now

If this is true for you, hereโ€™s what Iโ€™d suggest:

  • Be honest about what roles you need today, not whatโ€™s been inherited.
  • Donโ€™t be afraid to reshuffle. If someoneโ€™s outgrown their seat or the seatโ€™s outgrown them, make the change.
  • Use your structure to drive clarity. Everyone should know what they own and what theyโ€™re trusted to lead.
  • Make this a regular habit. Your business is growingโ€”your org chart should grow with it.

Fix It Before It Breaks You
