Is loyalty, holding your business back?
Are you choosing loyalty over performance in your leadership team?
If you’re like most successful business owners, CEOs, or senior leaders, your journey has been built with a close team around you. The people who were there in the early days, those who helped lay the foundation, feel like family. You trust them, you value their loyalty, you want to reward their commitment.
What if, the very person you feel most loyal to, is the one holding your business back?
This is not easy and it’s uncomfortable to think about. However, if your goal is real growth (i.e. consistent, scalable, and profitable growth), you need to ask the hard questions.
When Businesses Grow, Roles Change
As your business grows, everything evolves. Markets change, customer needs expand, operations gets more complex and expectations get higher.
However, people don’t always evolve at the same pace.
The loyal executive who helped you hire your first employees might not be the right person to lead a larger, more specialised team today. The person who once looked after multiple functions within your business, might now be overwhelmed by just one.
If they haven’t grown & evolved with the business, they could now be its biggest liability.
Are You Choosing Comfort Over Performance?
It happens more than you think. A business starts out lean with everyone doing everything. There’s hustle, grit and a shared sense of purpose.
Then things change. As you grow, you need structure, sharper execution, and higher performance from every role, especially the top ones.
Keeping someone in a leadership seat just because they’ve “been there from the beginning” is dangerous. You’re not just holding them back, you’re holding your business back.
The real question to ask yourself is:
“If I had a clean slate and I was hiring for this role again today, would I choose them again?”
If the honest answer is “no”, you have a critically important decision to make.
What should you do now?
This isn’t about being harsh and it’s not about burning bridges either. It’s about being a responsible leader and leading with clarity and courage.
Ask yourself:
- Can we reposition them into a role that actually suits their strengths today?
- Do we need to hire someone above them to close the performance gap?
- Is it time to have a respectful, direct conversation about parting ways?
Here’s the reality:
Growth at the level you’re aiming for does not happen on legacy loyalty.
It happens when the right people are in the right seats, doing the right work, at the right level, every day.
Don’t let loyalty cost you your growth
The best leaders make the hardest calls, not because it’s easy, but because it’s right. Your business, your team, and your future depend on it.
Take a fresh look at your leadership team, role by role.
Then make the decision your future self will thank you for.
