How are you doing with your New Years Resolutions?
As the clock struck midnight on December 31st, the air was buzzing with the promise of new beginnings. We raised our glasses to the future, our hearts brimming with resolutions, but here’s the thing – those grand plans we toasted to? They’re often familiar guests, having made an appearance in previous years, perhaps even lingering from years past.
Enthusiasm is our January companion, but it’s a fleeting one, often slipping away as quickly as it arrived, leaving us bereft of the discipline, time, energy, or focus we need to see our resolutions through.
Yet, there’s a silver lining for those of us in the business world. We’re granted a second chance at a fresh start with the onset of the financial new year on March 1st. The past year’s ledger is closed and we’re presented with a blank slate to craft a new chapter.
But why is it that change so often eludes us? The hard truth is that, deep down, many of us aren’t truly yearning for that change. If we were genuinely dissatisfied, we’d have taken action. If the prospect excited us, we’d be in hot pursuit. That leads us to the crucial first step: introspection. Ask yourself, what do you genuinely desire? Not what others expect of you, not what society deems worthy, but what sets your soul on fire?
And let’s talk about needs versus wants. Needs often arise out of pressure—a health scare that forces you to exercise, for example. We don’t want to wait for life to corner us into action. Instead, we should focus on what we authentically want.
Now, remember that ambitious list you made on New Year’s Eve? It’s brimming with intentions to exercise, cut out alcohol, eat healthily, nurture relationships, and more. But let’s be real – you still have only 24 hours in a day. If you’re trying to do it all at once, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
This is where the principle of ‘less is more’ becomes your mantra. Prioritise. It’s said that Warren Buffett advises writing down your top 25 priorities, choosing the top five, and forgetting the rest. But even within those five, you may need to focus on just one or two at a time.
I once had the privilege of working with a remarkable Paralympian who reminded me that while we can achieve anything we desire, we can’t have it all simultaneously. So, identify what you truly want, narrow your focus, and commit to those few priorities.
The third key to success is constant reminders. Visual cues are powerful motivators, so surround yourself with them. Whether it’s a vision board, a screensaver, or a note on your fridge, make sure your goals are in plain sight. Talk about them, too – not just to yourself, but with others. When people know you’re on a mission, they often help you reach your destination.
So, no matter where you are in the year or with your resolutions, if you crave change, clarify what you want, streamline your goals, and keep them visible. And that brings us to the final, most crucial point: ACTION.
The name of the game is action. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment or for universal support. It’s about the small, consistent steps you take every day toward your goals. You might stumble, you might have off days, but the key is to persist.
Change is in your hands. You have the power to shape your future, one deliberate action at a time. So, how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? It’s never too late to recalibrate and move forward with intention. Let’s make this year count.
